Concrete sidewalks and walkways in Montreal

A sidewalk heaved by frost, a cracked walkway that trips people, slabs tilting toward the house or a new path to the backyard: Dahomey Construction builds your concrete sidewalks and walkways in Montreal and the surrounding areas. We remove the old sidewalk if needed, prepare a solid base, form it with the right slopes and pour a concrete made for exterior use, finished so it is not slippery. Based in Ahuntsic, our team works on houses, plexes and buildings.

What we do

Types of work: sidewalks

Concrete sidewalk before and after the workType 01 · Sidewalks
Sidewalks

Sidewalk replacement

When a sidewalk is too damaged to repair, we break it up and haul it away, then rebuild the base before pouring the new one. It is often the base, too thin or poorly drained, that made the old sidewalk move. The new one is dug to the right depth, filled with stone and compacted. The sidewalk is then formed, poured and finished, with regular joints.

Walkways and paths

A walkway connects the entrance, the backyard, the shed or a side door. We follow the layout you want, adding curves or steps if needed, and give the walkway a slope that carries water away from the house. The width is chosen for its use: on foot, wheelbarrow, garbage bins or stroller.

Forming and slopes

A good sidewalk shows in its slopes: enough for water to drain, not so much that it is uncomfortable. We build the forms checking every section, and plan the connections with the steps, the driveway and the city sidewalk. Edges are straight and all sections have the same width.

Steps and connections

A sidewalk often meets steps, a porch or a driveway. We redo these connections so heights are even and no edge trips anyone. When the concrete steps are also damaged, they can be demolished and rebuilt at the same time as the sidewalk.

Type 05

Non-slip finish

A smooth concrete sidewalk becomes slippery in winter and in the rain. We give the surface a broomed finish that grips underfoot, with edges smoothed by trowel for a neat look. Control joints are made at regular intervals to guide shrinkage cracks, so the sidewalk keeps a clean, even look over the years and stays safe to walk on.

Our approach

A sidewalk lasts if its base is done right

01.

A sidewalk that heaves or breaks after a few winters often has a base that is too thin or poorly drained: water collects underneath, freezes and pushes the concrete.

02.

We dig to the right depth, lay and compact a stone that lets water drain, then pour a concrete made for exterior use. This preparation matters as much as the surface you see.

03.

In Montreal, sidewalks get a lot of salt. We advise you on caring for new concrete to avoid scaling from the first winter.

04.

Because we do demolition, forming, slabs and pressure washing, we can remove the old sidewalk, pour the new one and clean the surrounding surfaces in one visit. The result is a clean, safe and consistent access, from the street to the door, built for many Montreal winters.

Clear answers

Frequently asked questions

How much does a concrete sidewalk cost?

The price depends on the length, the width, the demolition needed and access. We prepare a quote after the visit.

Does the old sidewalk have to be demolished?

If the sidewalk is heaved, broken or poorly drained, it is better to redo it with a new base. If it is sound, a repair may be enough.

When can I walk on a new sidewalk?

After a few days, depending on the weather. We tell you how long to wait.

Can you redo the steps at the same time?

Yes. Steps and connections can be demolished and rebuilt with the sidewalk.

Repair or replace a cracked sidewalk?

A thin crack in a sound sidewalk can be sealed. If sections have heaved, sunk or broken into pieces, the base is the problem and it is better to redo the sidewalk with a new draining base.

Which finish should I choose for a sidewalk?

A broomed finish is the most common because it grips underfoot in rain and snow. Edges are smoothed by trowel for a neat look. We discuss it with you before the pour.

Do I need a permit for this work in Montreal?

It depends on the work and the borough. Many exterior projects require a permit from the borough. We check with you what applies before we start and tell you what steps to take.

Do you hold an RBQ licence?

Yes. Dahomey Construction holds RBQ licence 5825-5522-01. You can check it in the public registry of the Régie du bâtiment du Québec before the work starts.
