What we do

Types of work: demolition

Interior demolition of a room with materials being removedType 01 · Demolition
Demolition

Interior demolition

Before a new kitchen, bathroom or basement, the cabinets, tile, drywall, flooring and sometimes partitions have to come out. We first shut off what needs to be shut off, protect the floors and neighbouring rooms, then demolish in a set order so nothing that stays gets damaged. Load-bearing walls are never touched without an engineer’s opinion. When we are done, the room is empty, clean and ready for the next contractor, or for our own team if you trust us with the rest. Winter is a good time for this kind of indoor work.

Demolition of a concrete porch and stepsType 02 · Demolition
Demolition

Concrete demolition

A crumbling porch, cracked steps, a broken garage slab, a heaved sidewalk or a concrete patio: before pouring new concrete, the old concrete has to be broken up and hauled away. We work with a jackhammer or a saw depending on the thickness, the rebar and what is around it, to limit vibration near foundations and windows. The concrete we remove is sorted for recycling whenever possible. Because we also do the forming and pouring, demolition and rebuilding can follow each other without waiting for another contractor.

Commercial space stripped down to the structureType 03 · Demolition
Demolition

Commercial demolition

Restaurants, offices, stores and warehouses: before a new layout, the space often has to be stripped down to the structure. We remove partitions, drop ceilings, floor coverings and concrete elements that are no longer needed, taking into account the neighbours, the allowed hours and the access to bring materials out. The job is planned with you so the space is free on schedule and the next trades can start. We can also break up curbs, slabs or concrete pads inside and outside the building.

Demolition of a shed in a backyardType 04 · Demolition

Outbuildings

A leaning shed, a detached garage in poor shape, an old storage building or a rotten wooden deck: these structures take up space and become dangerous over time. We take them down, remove the concrete base if needed and leave a clear yard, ready for a new layout. Before we start, we check with you the access for equipment, the location of services such as electricity and gas, and what needs to be protected around it: fences, trees, flower beds and neighbours.

Debris removal

Demolition produces a lot of material: drywall, wood, tile, concrete, metal. We bring it out as we go, sort it and take it to approved sites, with a container when the volume calls for one. Concrete and metal are recycled whenever possible. You do not have to rent a container or make trips to the eco-centre. At the end of each day the site is tidied up, and at the end of the job it is swept and left clean.

Our approach

Good demolition sets up what comes next

01.

Demolition is the first step of a project, and it shapes everything that follows. Demolishing too much, too fast or in the wrong order can damage a foundation, plumbing or a wall that was supposed to stay.

02.

Before we start, we identify what must stay in place, shut off or have the services shut off, and protect the floors, windows and neighbouring rooms. Vibration is kept low near foundations and neighbouring buildings.

03.

In Montreal houses and plexes built before 1980, some materials may contain asbestos. We recommend having them tested before the work. If there is asbestos, it must be removed by a specialized company before our demolition.

04.

Because Dahomey Construction also does concrete, forming and general renovation, demolition and rebuilding can be done by the same team: one point of contact, from the beginning to the end of a building’s life.

How it works

Your project in four steps

Each step is discussed with you before we start, so you know what comes next and who does what.

01Step 1 / 4

Visit and quote

We see the site, identify what must stay in place and give you a written quote describing the demolition and the debris removal.

02Step 2 / 4

Protection and preparation

Services are shut off if needed, floors, windows and neighbouring rooms are protected, and the access to bring materials out is prepared.

03Step 3 / 4

Demolition

We demolish in the planned order, keeping dust and vibration low, and bring the materials out as we go.

04Step 4 / 4

Clean-up and debris

Debris is sorted and taken to approved sites. The site is swept and left ready for the rest of the work.

Frequently asked questions

How much does demolition cost in Montreal?

The price depends on the area, the materials to demolish, the thickness of the concrete, access to the site and the volume of debris. We prepare a detailed quote after seeing the site.

Do I need a demolition permit in Montreal?

It depends on the work and the borough. Demolishing a building requires authorization from the borough, and some exterior work requires a permit. We check with you what applies before we start.

How long does a demolition take?

A slab or a porch can be done in a day. A kitchen, a basement or a commercial space takes longer depending on the area. The schedule is set out in the quote.

What do you do with the debris?

We bring it out, sort it and take it to approved sites. Concrete and metal are recycled whenever possible. You have nothing to rent or haul.

What about asbestos in older houses?

In buildings from before 1980, have the materials tested before the demolition. If there is asbestos, it must be removed by a specialized company before our work.

Can you remove a load-bearing wall?

Not without an engineer’s opinion. A load-bearing wall needs calculations and temporary support. We work with the engineer of your choice or help you find one.

Do you hold an RBQ licence?

Yes. Dahomey Construction holds RBQ licence 5825-5522-01. You can check it in the public registry of the Régie du bâtiment du Québec before the work starts.
